Widow Economic Empowerment
Women make substantial contribution to socio-economic development especially in the agricultural sector. The society gives little chance to women to enter into other fields of various economic activities. They are burdened with family and house-hold responsibilities, especially in semi-urban and rural areas. When their status changes and they become widows, there are other challenges that comes along among them discrimination and limited access to credit
Illiteracy is highest among women and more-so widows has had negative consequences families since they are not able to get good jobs to cater for their families, including payment of school thus an increase in result drop outs. This creates a vicious cycle of poor families cascading down through generations. Due to high illiteracy among women, the quality of their participation in development activities is lower than that of men.
They face a myriad of social and economic problems, the biggest being lack of employment opportunities, thus high unemployment rate. They, as a result, get involved in illegal activities such as theft, alcohol abuse and immorality.
NYOGAYA Foundation will support women and youth in the County through trainings, exchange programmes and promoting talent search initiatives that offers them an opportunity to showcase their potentials. So far, the programme work and projects like Jewels are used for bead making which are sold to partners; the agricultural produce are sold to generate income to the women. We envision growing and building on these
successes moving forward.
